Afterwards she lay in his arms as he lazily stroked the skin over her hips.

‘Sam?’

‘Yes?’

‘I notice you have laparotomy scars.’

She tensed, swallowing. ‘Yeah.’

‘What were they for?’

She shrugged. ‘Something I had done as a child. Exploratory stuff. They weren’t sure what was going on.’

She’d known, though. Sam had known well enough what was going on. There had been nothing physically wrong with her except for what her mother was doing. Starving her so that she would have ‘unexplained weight loss’. Making her drink weird concoctions to give her ‘unexplained stomach pains’. All so that her mother could act the angst-ridden parent who was just so terribly grateful to all the doctors for looking after her and comforting her while Sam was in surgery.

The laparotomy had been the final straw for Sam. She’d had enough. She’d finally spoken out. After the doctors had gathered around her bed to tell Sam and her mother that they’d found nothing conclusive and her mother had gone home—no doubt to plan her next medical move—Sam had asked to speak to one of the doctors and told him everything, fearing that he wouldn’t believe her. Only he had. He had listened. And when her mother had turned up for her next visit, the police had been waiting.

But to tell Yanis that...? Even though they’d just shared something so intimate she should be able to tell him anything...? It wasn’t just about entrusting him with that information, it was whether she would be able to cope with the horror and pity she would see in his eyes. That she would never be able to stand.

‘And the appendectomy?’

‘Same. Done as a child.’

‘You spent a lot of time in hospitals when you were younger, then?’

‘You could say that.’

‘Is that where you found your passion for medicine?’

She thought for a moment. ‘It made me want to understand the human body. What it was capable of. What it could create. What diseases it could fight. Its strengths, its weaknesses.’

‘You are strong—you know that, right?’

‘Am I?’

‘Of course. Two new lives you carry within you. That’s a marvellous and wondrous thing.’

‘It’s a scary thing. I have a whole new respect for mothers.’

‘You didn’t have respect for mothers before?’

‘Yes. I just never really knew, if that makes any sense?’

‘What about your own mother?’

‘We don’t really talk.’

‘Why not?’

‘It’s a long story. If you don’t mind, I’d really rather not sully this perfect moment by speaking about her right now.’

Yanis had nuzzled into her neck. ‘Okay.’

Lying there, sated, was everything she needed in that moment.
